The plans made by the large telecom businesses would change the Internet into a cable-like system, where customers sign up for specific web sites, and must pay to see each individual site beyond a certain point. Subscription browsing would be limited, extra fees would be applied to access out-of-network sites. Many sites would be blocked altogether.

Last minute deal reached on kilometer tax

MPs on Thursday agreed to allow experiments with a kilometre tax on motoring after transport minister Camiel Eurlings assured them drivers will not be worse off.

Earlier this week, MPs refused to give the green light to the kilometre tax project because of fears that another new tax, this time from the provincial authorities, was on the table.

Dutch Investigation Kilometer Tax

Using an idea from entrepreneur, Roel Pieper, the Dutch government will replace current transportation taxes Dutch drivers currently pay with a system that charges drivers based on how much they drive.

Currently, Dutch drivers pay a 25% sales tax on new cars, a vehicle tax based on the price and weight of the car, plus a road tax based on the weight of the vehicle and the type of fuel used.

With technology known as MobiMiles, all of these taxes will be replaced by a system that uses global satellite positioning and other wireless technologies to charge drivers on a pay-as-you-go basis. Initially, drivers will be charged a flat price per kilometer but later fees may depend on road categories and time of day.

Dutch to use GPS to calculate road tax

The Dutch government is using GPS to track cars and charge them money based on the type of vehicle they own, how much they use it, what time they use it and whereabouts they are driving. All this information is sent to a government computer via a car transmitter and the cell-phone network and a fee is calculated, although the Dutch government has been quick to point out that no information about driver whereabouts is ever stored.

Bush welcomes new US citizens on 4th of July

On his final Fourth of July as president, Bush told an audience at the home of the Declaration of Independence's author that he was honored to be present for the naturalization.
Shouts from protesters were heard during Bush's remarks, and the president responded by saying he agrees that "we believe in free speech in the United States of America."

That's not just because David Icke, the former Coventry City goalkeeper, BBC sports presenter, Green Party spokesman and self-proclaimed Son of God, supports Mr Davis's campaign to hold back the barriers of the state. It's mostly because if he did become an MP, he would have to swear allegiance to the sovereign.
