Bobbies on the tweet to monitor demonstrators

Senior officers – some of whom have begun 'tweeting' themselves - believe it will give them an insight into how they are perceived by the public.

The sites could also give police an early-warning system in the run-up to events such as this week's Climate Camp in London, which has erupted in violence in the past.

A Met spokesman said: "We are not monitoring in a criminal sense, we are looking to use the sites to get our message out there. We are simply monitoring how we are perceived. It's not Big Brother-style monitoring."

Now ya kNOW ...
(You already did coz twitter is "PUBLIC" - )
Wanna TWEET private?
Ya kNOW what to do ;-)

Man-made volcanoes may cool Earth

The Royal Society is backing research into simulated volcanic eruptions, spraying millions of tons of dust into the air, in an attempt to stave off climate change.

It will suggest in a report that pouring sulphur-based particles into the upper atmosphere could be one of the few options available to humanity to keep the world cool.

Soldier tackles Brown on Afghan visit as PM urges talks with the Taliban

As Mr Brown chatted about football to a group of Welsh Guards over lunch at a British military base in Lashkar Gah in Helmand Province, 20-year-old Lance Corporal Dean Byfield politely inquired if he could ask a more serious question.

Showing no signs of nerves, he asked the Prime Minister:'Why do we have to pay tax while we are out here?'

Mr Brown, taken aback by the direct approach, explained that as a British soldier, Lance Corporal Byfield is technically a UK employee and therefore his income is taxed back home, even though he is stationed overseas.

Which 'healthy' cereal has more fat than fried egg on toast, and more sugar than a Coca-Cola?

Supermarket aisles heave with boxes of breakfast cereals promising they are 'high in fibre', 'organic', ' cholesterol-lowering' - and, enticed, we spend a collective £1billion a year.

So we should be getting our mornings off to the healthiest of starts.

Not so, according to a new report by consumer group Which?.

It found that 31 of the bestselling cereals had more than four teaspoons of sugar per serving - that's more than a bowl of chocolate ice cream.

Note from MM: POP the corn ... it's GM Food.

The swine flu call centres where staff have nothing to do but play cards and Trivial Pursuit

Earlier this month the Daily Mail revealed that some phone lines were being manned by 16-year-olds with as little as three hours training.

Fluedo: a dice game

The Flu Pandemic Game, which can be downloaded from the Department of Health's website, is for three to 60 players, takes around 90 minutes and has chance cards much like Monopoly.

Initially devised by Camden Primary Care Trust in North London, the game is supposed to simulate 'the effects of a flu pandemic on staffing in an imaginary group of small businesses', and a version has also been developed for use in GP surgeries and hospitals.

SOLAR SURPRISE:

Even during the deepest solar minimum in a century, the sun has the capacity for surprise. Larry Alvarez got one yesterday when he bent over the eyepiece of his solar telescope in Flower Mound, Texas. "I thought it would be just another day with a vanilla-wafer solar disk, but I was in for a blazing shock when I checked out the edge of the sun," he says. "There was a huge worm popping out of the apple--a prominence of magnificent proportions!" Here is what he saw:
