Children, 4, 'to be fingerprinted to borrow school books from library'

Under the scheme, pupils swipe a bar code inside the book they want borrow then press their thumb on to a scanner to authorise the loan. Books are returned in the same way.

Frenchman with no arms or legs set to swim the 22 miles across English Channel

Philippe Croizon will instantly earn himself a place in the record books if his 22 miles crossing from Folkestone, Kent, to Cap-Gris-Nez, near Calais, is successful.

The 42-year-old Frenchman, who is nicknamed ‘Iron Man’, lost his four limbs in 1994 when a TV aerial he was trying to mend touched an overhead power line.
He was immediately hit with 20,000 volts of electricity and had to have both arms and both legs amputated.

Huge sandstone arch at southern Nevada park collapses

The arch is along the Natural Arch Trail near the park's east entrance. Standing on a rock formation about 40 feet (12 meters) off the ground, the arch was nearly 6 feet (2 meters) tall and 5 feet (1.5 meters) across.

Strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake rocks Costa Rica

A strong earthquake shook Costa Rica on Monday evening, seismologists said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Possible local tsunami from India quake: US warning center

A strong earthquake off India's Andaman Islands has a potential to create a local tsunami near the epicenter, the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said Monday.
