The virus has been named the Schmallenberg virus after the German location where it was first identified on November 18, the paper says.
It is related to a group of viruses known as Orthobunya, which are usually found in Asia, Africa and Australia and do not transfer directly to humans.

Scientist who created deliberately created 'Armageddon' bird flu virus in lab says he will not publish details

A super-strain of bird flu that could infect and wipe out millions will not be published by the virologist developers.
Dutch scientists who created 'probably one of the most dangerous viruses you can make' have agreed to leave out details on how to construct the virus from published reports.

The decision was made after the US government warned releasing the details could be kill millions of people if it was used as a weapon of biological warfare.

But others argue the virus should never have been created - and warn the potential if it escaped from the lab is "staggering".

There are also fears the recipe will be seized on by terrorists looking for a biological weapon.

Many archeologists argue that the 2012 reference on a 1,300-year-old stone tablet only marks the end of a cycle in the Mayan calendar.

"The world will not end. It is an era," said Yeanet Zaldo, a tourism spokeswoman for the Caribbean state of Quintana Roo, home to Cancun. "For us, it is a message of hope."

"Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an Internet hoax," scientists wrote.
"There is no factual basis for these claims. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye.
