A photo snapped near Merida in Spain last week captured a tiny, innocent-looking spot on the sun - actually a sunspot group many times the size of Earth blasting our planet with high-energy particles.

The photo was taken last week at the height of Active Region 1429's activity, as the bubbling blemish on the sun spewed flares into space and triggered flickering aurora around the world.
