An Interview With Architect Charles Jencks

Charles Jencks is the author of several books on art and architecture. In 2004 he won the Gulbenkian Prize for Museums with his design for Landform Ueda.
His most recent book is The Iconic Building.

One can discern the beginnings of a shift in architecture that relates to a deep transformation going on in the sciences and in time will permeate all other areas of life. The new sciences of complexity - fractals, nonlinear dynamics, the new cosmology, self-organizing systems - have brought about the change in perspective. We have moved from a mechanistic view of the universe to one that is self-organizing at all levels, from the atom to the galaxy.
Illuminated by the computer, this new worldview is paralleled by changes now occurring in architecture.

The plurality of styles is a keynote. This reflects an underlying concern for the increasing pluralism of global cities. Growing out of post-modern complexity of the sixties and seventies - Jane Jacobs and Robert Venturi - is the complexity theory of the 1980s:
Pluralism leads to conflict, the inclusion of opposite tastes and composite goals, a melting and boiling pot. Modernist purity and reduction could not handle this reality very well.

The Death of God, like the death of other major narratives over the last hundred years, may be confined to the west, especially visible now that the globe is experiencing the ultimate clash of civilizations. But fundamentalisms, either American or Other, are not living cultural movements however powerful they may be. They have produced no art, architecture or writing worth preserving, and the deeper problems remain. In spite of these problems, the question of whether the new paradigm exists in architecture is worth asking. What we’re seeing may be a false start; the old paradigm of Modernism can easily reassert its hegemony, as it is lurking behind every Blair and Bush. But a wind is stirring architecture; at least it is the beginning of a shift in theory and practice.

The Lunar Mission Mystery

There is something wrong with US mission to the Moon. The legendary space mission is still shrouded in mystery. Mankind still has a number of reasons to cast doubt on the miracle of inter-planetary flights. Many people still say that US astronauts have never landed on the Moon.

Japan's Kaguya lunar orbiter took several pictures of the site, where Apollo 15 and Apollo 17 supposedly landed in 1971 and 1972. If the astronauts had ever landed there, they should have left a lot of equipment on the site, including the rovers, on which they traveled on the surface of the Earth's satellite. The pictures, which the Japanese rover took, showed not even the slightest hint of the US presence on the Moon.

There was only a spot of dust seen on the photograph of the site, from which Apollo-15 blasted off on its journey back to Earth. The spot, NASA said, was a firm evidence of Apollo’s presence on the Moon.

It is an open secret that the Moon's entire surface is all covered with a thick layer of dust. US astronauts took many pictures of their shoeprints on the Moons' surface. Joseph Skipper, a researcher of lunar and Martian anomalies, has many questions about the evidence, which the lunar dust provides. A number of images, made by the US astronauts showed their lunar rover standing at a distance from the landing module. There can be no wheel tracks seen on the pictures – as if the rover had flown from the lander to the site where it was photographed.

One may assume that the lunar ground was too hard for the wheel tracks to appear in it. However, there are many shoeprints in the dust around the rover. They can be seen even underneath the rover, although there are no wheel tracks on the ground at all.

Many people say that the US astronauts have never landed on the moon and that the entire mission is a fake. Others say that the missions took place, although the astronauts did not land on the Moon every time they traveled there. They could probably exaggerate their success to baffle the USA's major rival in the space race - the USSR.

It is not ruled out, though, that the discovered anomalies can be explained. They can be probably connected with certain peculiarities of the lunar dust and its interaction with electrostatic charges. However, serious scientists prefer not to throw too much light on the subject. S o u r c e

Tibetans are firmly convinced that Charles Darwin did nothing but steel his evolutionary theory from their religion.

Hidden Satanic Messages in Omarion’s Icebox Video

Through some obvious and some not-so-obvious symbols, the video tells the story of a troubled man who seeks protection with an evil entity.
Once again, like it was the case for other songs that were analyzed on this site (ie Rihanna's 'Umbrella'), the visuals tell a disturbing story that can only be understood if analyzed at the second or third degree. Most viewers will stare at the images of the video, not understanding their meaning yet feeling something inside. The unconscious mind registers the messages of the video without allowing the viewers to interpret them. They cannot decide if they are acceptable or not thus their psyche gets automatically affected. By knowing the hidden meaning of the video, your mind is free from whatever effects hidden message could have on you. Your consciousness is aware of the whole story thus you can accept or reject the messages displayed on your screen.

I've gotten messages from people saying: 'I'm now afraid to turn on the TV or the radio because of the satanic messages in the songs you're analyzing'. The purpose of those articles aren't make you scared, quite to the contrary. The goal is encourage you to have an analytic spirit when tackling works like this so you can interpret and judge them instead of being hypnotized by them. 'What about the kids? How can they analyze them', might you ask.
Well, there lies the tragedy.

I wrote the software that turned mortgages into bonds.

Because of the news, you probably know more about this than you ever wanted to. The packaging of heterogeneous home mortgages into uniform securities that can be accurately priced and exchanged has been singled out by many critics as one of the root causes of the mess we're in. I don't completely disagree. But in my view, and of course I'm inescapably biased, there’s nothing inherently flawed about securitization. Done correctly and conservatively, it increases the efficiency with which banks can loan money and tailor risks to the needs of investors. Once upon a time, this seemed like a very good idea, and it might well again, provided banks don't resume writing mortgages to people who can't afford them. Here's one thing that's definitely true: The software proved to be more sophisticated than the people who used it, and that has caused the whole world a lot of problems.

So this is what welcomes you when you enter the gates of hell…sorry, I meant the gates of the airport. A 32 foot high fiberglass stallion with veins popping out of its whole body and demonic eyes that glow red. Nice. I heard the children love it. Interesting fact: the horse killed his creator, Luis Jimenez, while he was working on it. A portion of the sculpture came loose and smashed him, causing fatal injuries. His friends now say that the horse is cursed.

What does it represent?
The 1st thing that came to mind when I saw this horrendous piece (for an aiport anyways) is: the Pale horse of the Apocalypse. It is the fourth horse in the book of Revelation in the Bible and is approprietely called 'Death'.

"And I looked, and behold a pale horse;
and his name that sat on him was
Death, and Hell followed with him.
And power was given unto them over the
fourth part of the earth, to kill with
sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth".
-Revelation 6:7-8

In other words, the horse 'Death' brought killing with weapons, with hunger, and with disease. That's pretty extreme a family airport, right? Doesn't seem like that horse should be there. You will soon realize that it fits perfectly with the rest of the DIA.

From military project to the masses - how the internet was born

The history of the internet is a story of military precision, academic vision and the occasional screw-up.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the technologies that led to the creation of the internet and revolutionised the way we work, talk and play.

While computer modems could connect machines as early as the 1960s, they were limited to one-to-one communication.

Eminent scientist J.C.R. Licklider first outlined his vision for an "intergalactic computer network", that predicted many of the ways we use the internet today, in 1962.

Six years later, the US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency – or DARPA – put the call out for computer scientists to build a network based on Licklider's ideas.

Information chief Robert Taylor knew there must be a better system than what he had in his office.

His three computers were connected to other machines, but he still had to get up and change seats every time he wanted to look at different data.

The solution DARPA was looking for was as simple as placing a machine between all the others that would help them exchange information with each other.

By 1969, scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology had heeded the call from DARPA and developed a basic network.

On the evening of October 29, at about 10:30pm, scientists watched as the first successful connection was made between computers at Stanford University, in Silicon Valley, and UCLA about 400km away in Los Angeles.

The network was dubbed ARPANET.

The first message transmitted over the network was unintentionally puzzling. It was supposed to be "login", but the connection failed after two keystrokes – so the first official transmission was actually "lo".

While ARPANET would be unrecognisable to most web users today, it provided the inspiration and the architecture for the development of the internet.

In the following years, new networks were built, others spread and split, migrating to new shores for military and academic use.

They were eventually united by a protocol called TCP/IP that still rules the internet today.

In fact, one of the scientists who helped to create the protocol – Vint Cerf – is now working on plans for a similar network in outer space with NASA.

Maybe in our lifetime, we will see the completion of Licklider's extraordinary vision – the intergalactic internet.

In the unclassified study, the College of Aerospace Doctrine, Research, and Education at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama posed several "fictional representations of future situations/scenarios" likely to arise.
