Berlin throws away swine flu jabs

Berlin in Germany has already thrown away 10,700 doses of GlaxoSmithKline's Pandemrix swine flu jab because they have passed their expiry date, it has emerged.

Berlin Senate health officials said in answers to MP Mario Czaja that Pandemrix jabs worth 90,000 euros have passed their expiry date.

Yemen and The Militarization of Strategic Waterways

The Yemeni archipelago of Socotra in the Indian Ocean is located some 80 kilometres off the Horn of Africa and 380 kilometres South of the Yemeni coastline. The islands of Socotra are a wildlife reserve recognized by (UNESCO), as a World Natural Heritage Site.

Socotra is at the crossroads of the strategic naval waterways of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. It is of crucial importance to the US military.

Among Washington's strategic objectives is the militarization of major sea ways. This strategic waterway links the Mediterranean to South Asia and the Far East, through the Suez Canal, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

It is a major transit route for oil tankers. A large share of China's industrial exports to Western Europe transits through this strategic waterway. Maritime trade from East and Southern Africa to Western Europe also transits within proximity of Socotra (Suqutra), through the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea. A military base in Socotra could be used to oversee the movement of vessels including war ships in an out of the Gulf of Aden.

BIG NEW SUNSPOT:

In less than 48 hours, a monsterous sunspot group has materialized in the sun's northern hemisphere. Rogerio Marcon sends this picture of new sunspot 1045 taken earlier today from his backyard observatory in Campinas, Brasil.

The arcs in Marcon's photo are unstable and they have already erupted at least six times this weekend, producing a series of C- and M-class solar flares. These flares have caused brief ionization events in Earth's upper atmosphere, but little else so far. There is a 10% chance of a much more powerful X-flare in the next 24 hours, according to NOAA forecasters, so bigger things could be in the offing.

EARTH-DIRECTED ERUPTION?

NASA's STEREO-B spacecraft is tracking four active regions strung across the eastern hemisphere of the sun.
See the scene in motion--and keep an eye on number 4.

The movie shows an eruption of unstable magnetic loops. The blast occured around 0130 UT on February 5th and it appears to have hurled some material in the general direction of Earth. (Our planet is off the right edge of the image.)
The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) has a direct view of the blast site, but SOHO images are not yet available to assist our evaluation. This was not a major eruption, but it could spark polar auroras a few days from now if a cloud is indeed en route.
