Fortis Bank predicts US Financial market meltdown within weeks

Fortis is a large bank and insurer in the Netherlands and Belgium. It took over ABN Amro last year, together with RBS and another bank. Last Thursday, its share lost 17% because Fortis attracted foreign capital.

BRUSSELS/AMSTERDAM - Fortis expects a complete collapse of the US financial markets within a few days to weeks. That explains, according to Fortis, the series of interventions of last Thursday to retrieve euro 8 billion. "We have been saved just in time.

The situation in the US is much worse than we thought", says Fortis chairman Maurice Lippens. Fortis expects bankruptcies amongst 6000 American banks which have a small coverage currently. But also Citigroup, General Motors, there is starting a complete meltdown in the US"

Quote for NOW

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,
and though they are with you,
and yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love, but not your thoughts.
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.

For life goes not backward, nor tarries with yesterday.

Kahlil Gibran, 1883-1931

Agents searched Hogan's luggage and then popped an unexpected question: Was he carrying any digital media cards or drives in his pockets?

"Then they told me that they were impounding my laptop," says Hogan, a freelance investigative reporter whose recent stories have ranged from the origins of the Iraq war to the impact of money in presidential politics.
