2,100-year-old gadget tracked Olympics

The 2,100-year-old Antikythera Mechanism was recovered from an ancient shipwreck in 1901 near Antikythera, a small island off Greece's south coast.

Its insides look like a clock. About 30 bronze gears were cranked to calculate phases of the moon, eclipses and other celestial information specific to a certain date. Results were displayed on dials on the front and back of the mechanism.

Be of service

Those who achieve the most do not see themselves as competing. They see themselves as serving.

If you wish to make clear and unmistakable progress, be of service. If you seek to create great value, be of service.

When your strategy is to grab all you can as quickly as you can, you will be met with debilitating opposition. When your strategy is to be of genuine service, your support will run far and wide.

It is foolish to think that you can fight against the world. True success comes when you choose to work for the world.

At any age, in any condition, for every circumstance, there is much you can give to life. Look for what you can offer, and there is much that you will find.

Give birth to a rich prosperity that will fill your own life and the world around you. Choose always, at every opportunity, to be of service.

IBM Research Develops Technology to Aid Human Memory

Researchers at IBM's Haifa Research Lab in Israel are pairing advanced mobile technologies with memory cues to develop a system that can analyze acquired data, create hooks to related experiences, and use them to populate a person's information management applications. Once the address books and calendars are updated, the technology enables memory recall triggered by time, location or the introduction of related information.

For example, if you meet someone at a conference and use your phone to take a picture of him or her and another picture of that person's business card, the new technology will associate the two pieces of data because they were taken at the same time and location. It then creates a virtual briefcase of data that includes the person's image, the name of the conference where you met, the date and time, and any other relevant data.

Another Lisbon Vote would be Suicide shows Irish Poll

The news will come as a major blow to ministers.
Senior Irish government sources have been hinting, both before and after French President Nicolas Sarkozy's visit to Dublin last week, that a new referendum could be held in March next year. According to today's survey, which was carried out by the established polling organisation Red C poll, 71 per cent of voters are opposed to holding a second vote. Moreover, 62 per cent said they would vote 'no' in a second referendum compared to only 24 per cent who are in favour. Back in June, 38 per cent of the Irish electorate backed the treaty.

7-square-mile ice sheet breaks loose in Canada

Derek Mueller, a research at Trent University, was careful not to blame global warming, but said it the event was consistent with the theory that the current Arctic climate isn't rebuilding ice sheets.

"We're in a different climate now," he said. "It's not conducive to regrowing them. It's a one-way process."
